What is vaginal steaming and how does it work?

Vaginal or yoni steaming (“yoni” means vagina in Sanskrit) is a holistic health practice wherein the woman allows the warmth of herbal steam to gently permeate her vagina. It is an ancient remedy that has been used by women for centuries worldwide.

Other steaming processes release mucus and decongests sinuses; at the spa, with a damp warm cloth, your pores are opened up to help with a deeper clean and we go into a sauna to sweat so we can detox our whole body since the skin is the largest detox organ.

It is the same effect for yoni steam, it can penetrate easily into your skin and tissues, helping to release any old residue and increase circulation to your reproductive organs.

Vaginal steaming is beneficial in so many ways, it –

  • Significantly reduces pain, bloating and exhaustion associated with menstruation.
  • Decreases menstrual flow as well as reduce dark purple or brown blood at the onset or end of menses.
  • Regulates irregular or absent menstrual cycles.
  • Helps increase fertility
  • Helps speed up the healing and toning of the reproductive system after birth.
  • Reduces uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, uterine weakness, uterine prolapse & endometriosis.
  • Assists with the repair of a vaginal tear, episiotomy, or C-section scar.
  • Assists with the healing of hemorrhoids.
  • Relieves chronic vaginal/yeast infections, and works to maintain healthy odor.
  • Eases symptoms of menopause including dryness or pain during intercourse.
  • Detoxifies the womb and removes toxins from the body.
  • Releases stored emotions and tap into the energy that is our creative potential.

Who should do vaginal steam and is it safe?

Women at least 18 years old may do the vaginal cleanse. It is best to wait to avoid interfering with the developing flora.

It is important to note to not steam when you’re trying to get pregnant, meaning not while you are ovulating. You can do it after your period, during your follicular phase before your period. It is also not advisable to steam when you have an infection as the heat will just worsen things. You may also not steam if you are pregnant, at the risk of spontaneous bleeding, have had your tubes tied or that you are taking birth control pills that function to form a thick uterine lining.

Vaginal steaming is safe just like going to the sauna to release toxins from your body through your skin. You can steam 4 to 6 times a month.
