If you are like me and have an unbreakable habit of popping pimples or trying to remove whiteheads and blackheads prematurely, then it is makes sense to do it the right way. I have to admit, I find it extremely difficult to keep my hands off my face or be comfortable parading around with a ripe zit on my face.

The bad news is that trying to remove whiteheads, blackheads, zits or pimples prematurely can usually leave unpleasant reminders, otherwise known as scars.

Trying to remove blemishes on your own can create or increase the severity of the scar because you can force the damage into the deeper layer of the dermis.

In addition to creating and exaggerating scars, zit popping, if done incorrectly can spread the bacteria to surrounding areas of the skin and trigger the onset of new blemishes. So yes, you can worsen the situation with your prying hands.

With that said, if you absolutely cannot keep your hands off your face, then it is essential you take precaution when trying to remove whiteheads or blackheads. Here are some steps you can take

Begin with a gentle cleanser

Do not try to remove whiteheads and blackheads on a dirty face, this will only make it worse! When you empty the contents of a zit, you’ve opened up the skin and  if doing this on a dirty face, you will only introduce bacteria into affected area.

Make sure to use clean hands

When trying to remove whiteheads and blackheads it is essential Dirty hands will only spread bacteria.

Sanitize the area around the blemish

I like to apply a gentle toner, witch hazel is a great natural toner, to the area prior to the big pop.

Apply gentle pressure, keyword is gentle

Squeeze the sides gently forcing the contents out and wipe off with a cotton ball. Now, this is the most important part, make sure that you squeeze out all the contents of the blemish as anything left in the skin can get infected and lead to more blemishes.

Be gentle and use the balls of your fingers as opposed your fingers to avoid scabbing the skin and rotate around the blemish to fully get all the contents out.

Do not force squeeze or try to pop a stubborn blemish!

Clean the area

I like to clean the area again with witch hazel or hydrogen peroxide. Followed by a dab of tea tree oil which is antiseptic to prevent infection and promote healing.
